About Chris

For more than four decades, Chris Friel has been one of the Pacific Northwest’s most respected drummers, a musician whose influence extends far beyond the stage. Known for his powerful groove, musical versatility, and unwavering dedication to the craft, Chris has built a career defined not by chasing trends, but by serving the music, supporting fellow artists, and helping shape Seattle’s vibrant musical community.

Chris first came to prominence in the 1980s as a founding member of Seattle hard rock legends TKO, but his story reaches far beyond any single band. Throughout a career spanning thousands of performances, countless recording sessions, and collaborations across genres, he has earned a reputation as the drummer musicians call when they want someone who can bring both precision and soul to the music.

Whether behind a rock band, an Americana songwriter, a country ensemble, or an intimate acoustic project, Chris brings the same rare combination of power, restraint, and instinctive feel. His playing is rooted in a deep respect for the song itself—a quality that has made him one of the Northwest’s most trusted and enduring musical voices.

Beyond his work as a performer, Chris has spent years mentoring younger musicians, building community, and championing the idea that music is ultimately about connection. Generations of Northwest players know him not only as a world-class drummer, but as a generous collaborator, teacher, and friend.

Today, Chris continues to perform, record, and explore new musical territory while remaining deeply connected to the community that has been his home for decades. His career stands as a testament to the lasting power of craftsmanship, curiosity, and a lifelong love of making music.

Chris currently performs with an extraordinary group of Northwest musicians including Kim Virant (vocals), Gary Westlake (guitar), Jeff Rouse (bass), Max Rose (saxophone & guitar), and Kathy Moore (guitar & piano).
